KOLLAM: Oscar Award winner Resul Pookutty has said that the award won by him amounted to a mild punishment for the Malayalam Cinema. (Malayalam cinemakku kittiya oru chevikku pidi).
Addressing a meet-the-press programme at the Press Club here, Resul, however, refused to explain what he meant by his comment. He said we are in need of a parallel distribution system for the growth of good cinema. Only if there are good producers and distributors good cinema could flourish. Star concept and value are not good for the growth of good cinema. The standard of the audience of Malayalam cinema is very high and it is not right to underestimate it, he said.According to Resul, Indians could win three Oscars because Danny Boyle, the producer of Slumdog Millionaire, gave a chance. Renowned Indian filmmakers like Meera Nair are engaging Hollywood technicians for their films. It was because of the immense response of the audience in the US and the West, the Slumdog Millionaire won the awards. The international producers have now realised that Indian cinema is not lagging in technology, Resul Pookutty said. He said that though he was interested in working for Malayalam films, especially with those who view film making in a serious manner, for the time being it is not possible as he has got a busy schedule. Sound recording is a job which takes much time and it will take 6 to 7 months to complete the work of a film, Resul said.He said though he wants to direct a film, it is not in his immediate agenda and he will concentrate on achieving more perfection in his job. According to him, sound recording is not a mere technology, but an art.He said that he was not associated with any organised political party though he had his own political convictions.
