Everton’s hopes of securing a Champions League place suffered a huge blow yesterday when Mikel Arteta was ruled out for about six months with a ruptured cruciate ligament in his right knee.
The Spanish playmaker was carried off on a stretcher seven minutes into the goalless draw away to Newcastle United on Sunday after landing awkwardly, and the results of a scan confirmed David Moyes’s worst fears. The Everton manager’s troubles could go from bad to worse with the club sweating on the fitness of Victor Anichebe.
The Nigeria forward underwent a scan yesterday to determine the extent of the damage to his knee arising from an horrific two-footed tackle by Kevin Nolan, for which the Newcastle midfield player was sent off.
“I’ve never felt as much pain in my life,” Anichebe said. “I thought I’d broken my leg. I couldn’t even look down. It was a terrible tackle, but I don’t think he meant it and he said sorry.”
